Title – State Capital Game (‘I have–Who has?’)

By – Janice Donalson

Primary Subject – Social Studies

Secondary Subjects -

Grade Level – 3-5

Objective: Help all of your students learn all of the state capitals.

Give all students a list of the 50 capitals and states. I made mine in the order in which they entered the U.S. Tell them to study the ones they don’t know and practice at home for 2 days.

Make a deck of 3 X 5 index cards with a capital on the lower half (#1 would be Dover) and a state on the top (#1 would say “START” and #2 would have Delaware on the top and Harrisburg on the bottom.) I did mine in hot pink and laminated them. You’ll have 51 total.)

Pass out all of the cards, or start with the first 25 (notch a corner to tell the first half) and then add the rest after the first round. Some students will have more than one card. The student with the START card says, “Dover is the capital OF…” and the student with Delaware says, “Delaware. Harrisburg is the capital OF…” and so on, until you reach the last card, which says Honolulu at the top and END at the bottom. Then everybody applauds with relief.

The first round takes a long time if you don’t have some students who know most of the capitals, but after the first round you can collect the cards and pass them out again and the second game goes faster. The kids love saying their turn fast.

Tips:

–Have students clear desks and lay card(s) flat so their neighbors can see their cards and tip them off (silently) if they don’t recognize their capitals.

–Tell students to stand beside their desks to say their ‘turn’ so everyone can hear.

–Let younger or ESL classes look at the list while playing until they are comfortable, then let themselves wean off of looking.

–Time, if you have a stopwatch, to show that each round will be faster than the last.

When everybody knows their capitals, everybody wins!
