Title – Treasure Maps

Alabama Course of Study Correlation

    #1 — Develop map and globe skills appropriate to developmental level and grade level.

Behavioral Objectives:

    Students will be able to -

    1.  Identify the parts of a map.

    2.  Draw a treasure map.

Materials:


  • How I Became a Pirate

    by Melinda Long,
  • copy of treasure map from story,
  • social studies textbook,
  • construction paper,
  • crayons, and markers.

Teaching/Learning Procedures

    A.  Motivation

      1.  Ask students if they like pirates.

      2.  Read

      How I Became a Pirate

      .

    B.  Instructional Procedures

      1.  Give students a copy of the treasure map from the story.

      2.  Have students look at maps in their textbooks.

      3.  Discuss with students various things maps can be used for.

      4.  Discuss parts of a map and what each part is used for.

      5.  Tell students to pretend they have a treasure chest.

      6.  Have students think of the best place they could hide their treasure.

      7.  Give students a piece of construction paper.

      8.  Tell them they will draw a treasure map showing where they would bury their treasure chest. They should include a compass rose with cardinal directions and a map legend using symbols to show various things included in their map.

    C. Closure

      1. Have students write in their journal about “
