Every freedom entails a responsibility. For instance, one of your rights is to a good, free education. Your responsibility for this right is to do your homework; respect the administration; take good care of the buildings, grounds and supplies; study; and behave in a manner that doesn’t take a freedom away from someone else.

After discussing responsibility, make a set of dominos and play the game.

Cut cardboard into 1 1/2 x 3 inch rectangles. Use the stickers that are intended to be used on a calendar or school agenda, as reminders of doctor’s appointments, special days, etc. Put two stickers on each rectangle.

Discuss what your responsibility would be for each occasion.

To play dominos, spread the tiles out face down. Each player picks four. One tile is turned up. Go around the table, taking turns. If the player can match a picture, lay the tile down touching one of the three sides of the first tile. If they cannot match, pick up a tile and pass the turn to the next player. The first person to use up all of their tiles wins.

I am a director for an after school program run by the YMCA. I used this to go over one of the core values in a fun way.

A second activity is to make a bookmark. Write your rights and freedoms on one side. Write your duty that relates to that freedom on the other side. To laminate the bookmark, cover it with clear packing tape. The brand name tape doesn’t wrinkle as badly as the cheap brand.
