Title – Primary Resources By – Lisa Stephens Primary Subject – Social Studies Secondary Subjects – Social Studies Grade Level – 4 – 8 Title: Primary Sources / Historiography Concept: The importance of studying primary/initial sources when learning about history. General Goals: Students will realize the importance of looking at original and contemporary writings and research to form opinions regarding “historical facts.” Lead In: Play the telephone (or gossip) game. Whisper a sentence in the ear of one student. Have the student whisper the sentence to the next student until it has gone all the way around the room. The last student repeats what he heard loudly to the class. How different is that message from the one the first student was told? What changed? Each time a historian writes or a biographer interviews someone; the story has the opportunity to change. What effect does his have on history and how we regard historical facts? If each student had represented a decade, how much had the story changed in 230 years? Follow Up: Supply the students with original representations of historical documents (the Constitution, Bill of Rights, letter from Abigail Adams to her husband). Discuss certain passages and how they could be interpreted differently by different generations. What words have different meanings today? Most of these will be in manuscript. Discuss the skill and patience needed to write and spell these documents. Could there have been any errors of importance during the process?
