During the first week of school, I try to find ways to make geography relevant to my students’lives. One way to do this is what I call “Autogeographies”. I use the Collins Writing Process for ‘brainstorming on paper’ the various locations they have been connected to, such as where they were born, places they have lived and visited, cities and states their relatives live in, and places they would like to visit some day. When appropriate, I encourage the 5 “Ws” and after self and peer editing, a final finished copy is produced for grading. These make my subject – geography – more meaningful and starts the year off on a positive note!
