Title – Immigration in New York

By – Michelle Gomez

Primary Subject – Social Studies

Grade Level – 4th

Aim:

    1. Students will be familiar with the struggles of immigrants throughout the years and understand the reasons people immigrated to New York.

    2. Students will be familiar with the role Ellis Island played in the immigration to New York throughout history.

Materials:

Students and teachers will need to download or research “live documents” and primary sources from the web.

Process:

Students review the primary sources and documents and create their own questions to ask about each. (This can be done in groups)

Once each group has completed the development of thoughtful questions, then the groups switch information and the next group must answer the questions their neighboring group developed.

Evaluation/Assessment:

Students must return answered questions to the originating group. The answers are assessed and graded by that group. Then in a group circle discuss what they learned about immigration from the documents.
