Title – How a Bill Becomes a Law

Grade Level – 9-10

Content:

    Students will learn a basic understanding of how a bill becomes a law on the state and federal level.

Benchmarks:

    METS 9-12 Standard CI.3:

      Use a variety of media and formats to design, develop, publish, and present projects.

Learning Resources and Materials:

  • Computer, paper, writing utensil
  • Inspiration software
  • Teacher created “How a Bill becomes a Law” presentation

Development of Lesson:

    Introduction:

    • Students will learn through an Inspiration software presentation “How a Bill becomes a Law.”
    • The presentation will include a diagram of the different steps involved in the bill making process.
    • Part of the presentation will mimic a PowerPoint presentation in order to give students information in an organized manner.

    Methods/Procedures:

    1. The teacher introduces the lesson and the objectives.
    2. The students begin a KWL chart on how a bill becomes a law.
    3. The Inspiration presentation runs throughout most of the class time.
    4. Students take notes on the presentation and write down questions they have on their KWL charts.
    5. Students ask their questions after the presentation is complete.
    6. The KWL chart is completed as the ending to this lesson.

    Accommodations/Adaptations:

    • A presentation with sound on the computer will be provided for the visually impaired.
    • Other disabilities will be able to adapt to the presentation since it uses a variety of different teaching methods.

    Assessment/Evaluation:

    • The teacher assesses the students through their KWL charts which will be turned in at the end of the class.
    • From these charts, the teacher can see how much information the students had before the lesson and how much they have learned.
    • The teacher will be able to use this information to plan future lessons.

    Closure:

      Through a basic understanding of how a bill becomes a law, students will not only gain information essential to their citizenship, but they will have the knowledge needed in order to move on in the subject of political science.

Teacher Reflection:


    With the Inspiration software, I believe this presentation will be effective and entertaining to the students. I think it is important to implement technology in the classroom and the Inspiration presentation will allow you to do this in the best way possible.
