Title – Land vs. Water By – Deborah Poteat Primary Subject – Social Studies Secondary Subjects - Grade Level – K-3 *Topic to teach: Is there more land or water on Earth? *Standards Addressed: Geographical Terms/ Locations/ More Than/ Less Than *General Goal: Students will observe, through playing a game, if there is more water or land on Earth. *Specific Objectives: Students will learn that the Earth is mainly covered with water by playing a simple game. *Materials: Inflatable globe, board. *Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Predict- Do you think there is more land on the Earth or water? Ask students to name different places on Earth in which they have noticed water. Examples: Lakes, beaches, rivers, ponds, streams, etc. List these on the board. *Step-By-Step Procedures: (1)Brainstorm; List different places on Earth in which they have noticed water. Discuss. Ask the students if they think there is more water or land on Earth. Tally results on board.(2)State Objective; Today we will playing a game to find out if there is more land on Earth or water. I will throw this inflatable globe to one of you. When you catch it, look under your right thumb and tell me if it landed on land or water. Water is represented by the blue color, land is shown by all other colors.(3)List Number of Hits; after each student catches the ball, he or she will tell the recorder, at the board, what is under the right thumb. Ball is thrown back to the teacher and play continues until everyone has had a turn. (4)Discuss Results; Add tally marks. Ask questions such as; What part of Earth did your thumb land on the most? Why did you think that happened? Was your prediction at the beginning of the game correct? Note: My students love this game and ask to play again and again.
