Title – Learning Geography Words for Maps

Primary Subject – Social Studies

Secondary Subjects -

Grade Level – 3

Materials:

The following list of words and defintions for each student in your class.

A map to be able to point to each of the examples of the words.

Activity:

Give each child a list of these vocabulary words.

1. altitude- Distance above sea level. Tells you how high or how tall a mountain or other piece of land is.

2. atlas- A book of maps.

3. archipelago- A group of islands close together in an ocean or sea.

4. bay A wide area of water extending into lands from a sea or lake.

5. boundaries- Lines indicating the limits of countries, states, or other political jurisdictions.

6. canal- a man made watercourse designed to carry ships, goods or water.

7. canyon- A large but narrow gorge with steeps sides.

8. cartographer- A person who draws or makes maps or charts.

Activity:

Find examples of these items on a map. Explain to the students what it is. Examples of these vocabulary words are:

archipelago-The Philippine Islands

bay- Golden Gate Bay

canal- The Suez Canalin Egypt.

Canyon-The Grand Canyon.

cartographer- Lewis and Clark expedition.
