Learning Resources and Materials:

  • an overhead,
  • a computer,
  • a projector,
  • posterboard,
  • markers,
  • printers

Development of Lesson:

    Introduction:

I will ask the students what they think the most important part of a country’s success is. We will then list the components necessary for a strong country. As a class, we will create a country and list components that we think would benefit the country. We will study the fact that war and population increases could affect us and discuss how we would handle that. After the class is done creating one country with positives and negatives, they will be assigned the task of designing their own country. They will be required to create a poster board display showing the different aspects of their country.

    Methods/Procedures:

Students will use a digital camera to take pictures of things (police cars, hospitals, court house, etc.) in their neighborhoods which would be beneficial in a country. They will also record with a digital camcorder, a mock city council or whatever form of government they are designing for their country.

    Accommodations/Adaptations:

If there are children in your class with special needs, this is a pretty easy activity in that it does not require a lot of analytical thinking, but more of an imaginative aspect which could benefit those with autism and attention problems.

    Assessment/Evaluation:

Afterwards, compare and contrast the different social issues that could affect a country and discuss how different types of leaders and cultures address them.

    Closure:

Students will present their boards to the class.
