Title – Kids Count Too! By – Fay Christie Primary Subject – Social Studies Secondary Subjects - Grade Level – 2-5 Every 5 years Canada does it’s Census (this idea is appropriate for any nation’s census). Various propaganda information was sent to our school so we could encourage kids to get their parents to send in the forms. To give this process more relevance for my Grade 2 students, we did a great activity that could be considered a part of many different outcomes (from math, to language arts or socials studies) depending on how you set it up. To introduce the lesson I read from the census material and with the class we brainstormed the reasons we would need to know how many people lived in Canada. Many reasons were recorded and from these the students chose two, which they recorded on a small (half sheet of paper) decorated in the census logo (and a title – Why the census is important…) The students then created a ‘glyph’, which in this case consisted of a paper doll (copied on tag board). The students each had a copy of a ‘survey’ I created that consisted of 10 questions or directions that they had to follow (similar to the ones on the census). The first direction was “If you are a girl take a girl doll, if you are a boy take a boy doll”. The next direction was “If you walk to school color your shoes purple, If you drive to school color your shoes red”, and so on. The end result was each student with an individual doll that reflected the student’s individual information and preferences. When the dolls were completed we put them on an outside hallway bulletin board for the school to admire (and copy).
