By – Debbie Haren

Primary Subject – Science

Secondary Subjects -

Grade Level – 2-3

Materials:

several pickles

lemon

chocolate

cinnamon

peanut butter

small cups

aluminum foil

Paper

pencils

Procedure:

Take a small amount of each item and put them each into separate cups. Then put the aluminum foil over the cups and secure it around the cups. Then use a pen or toothpick to put a small hole in the tops of the foil. Give each child a plain piece of paper and pencil and have them number from 1 to 4. Then have them go over to the cups and smell the item. Then have them put down a guess of what they think it is. After everyone has guessed have them share their guess with the person sitting next to them. Talk about what a hypothesis is and how scientists use it to from theories.

Objectives: To learn about what a hypothesis is. To try to use only the sense of smell to guess what something is. To write down and compare answers with someone else.
