The next area that would be essential to study would be the way many of people have tried to tame the ocean by crossing it. Talk about the different types of vessels that have sailed the ocean. Discuss the long voyages and the types of items they would have on board for such long journeys. Take the class back through time by discussing the different types of shipping vessels and how they improved up though the years to hold many more people and be used for all kinds of different reasons. Fishing, pleasure, long cruises, crossing the Atlantic in a boat. This would be a terrific time to do a play or skit of the different types of boats and how many people were used to man them. The students could also report on the parts of the boats.
