By – Joanna Claire Rebone

Subject – Science, Multidisciplinary

Grade Level – 3rd

Focus: Read Jack’s Garden by Henry Cole. After reading the book students observe a lima bean seed that has sprouted a plant of its own. -put bean in baggie with wetted paper towel around it. Watch seed grow in 2-3 days!

Objective: Students will learn how plants grow from seeds and what is needed for them to grow.

Instruction: The class will divide in to 2 groups. One group will start with the math lesson, while the other will do science.

Math-the math group will be estimating with pumpkin seeds. Each child will pick a handful from inside a pumpkin- open from the top. They will count how many seeds they have and compare that number with their prediction.

Science- The science group will be planting rice seeds. They also will learn what plants need when planting and how to care for their plant. Use little paper-Dixie cups, half filled with soil and a few rice seeds that sprout in 2 days. The students will make predictions as to how the plant will look when it grows.

Closure: The students will come back together and do a writing exercise. They will write about a plant they like to eat and what is special about that plant-ex. pumpkins, bananas, carrots
