Ladybug Lesson Plans
by Amber Michelle Shelkett
3rd grade
Objectives
Students should know the basic concept of ladybugs and aphids in relationship to our environment and world.
Students should understand about the life growth of ladybugs.
Introduction
Today we are going to learn about ladybugs and how they are important to our world.
The teacher will begin by reading the class a story titled The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle.
Content
After the story is over I will pass out a sheet with ladybug facts on it. As the students are looking at the worksheet the teacher will read the facts to them and answer any questions the students may have.
The teacher will express the importance of ladybugs to our environment and why people need them to help us.
Method and Procedures
The teacher will ask the students why ladybugs eat aphids and have them describe what damage aphids can do without the help of ladybugs.
Closure
To end the lesson the teacher will pass around a container with live ladybugs inside. The students will see and understand what ladybugs look like in their natural environment.
Assignment/Evaluation
For the rest of the week the students will observe the ladybugs that are in the container. They will write down what they see.
At the end of the week, the students will write a short story about ladybugs and share it with the entire class.
