SCIENCE PROJECT OF THE WEEK

BIRTHDAYS

PROBLEM: What is the most common month for birthdays at Your School?

RESEARCH: Survey your class and find out what is the most common month for birthdays in your class.

HYPOTHESIS: Do you think it will probably be the same for the whole school?

MATERIALS:

Tickets – to be distributed to all students at Your School

Student population for the school

Data table – to be compiled during class by students who collected data          

PROCEDURE:

Gather tickets from ten students at Your School. Each student may volunteer information only once. At the time you gather the tickets, record in your data the name of the student and the month of birth of the student whose ticket you take.

DATA:           

Your data must include:

          1. The data you collect from ten students in a table

          2. The data from your team

          3. Data from all the classes on the core team in a table

          4. A graph that shows the number of students whose birthdays are in each month

CONCLUSION: This is not optional. You must explain what you learned by doing this activity.

Remember that you must answer the question you asked in your original problem statement.

NOTE: BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR PARENT OR GUARDIAN SIGN YOUR WORK. PARENTS: YOUR SIGNATURE SHOWS YOUR STUDENT HAS DONE THE WORK.

TEACHER SECTION:

POSSIBLE HYPOTHESIS: Students may feel that the sample size with just one class is sufficient. However, for the data to be dependable, a larger sample must be taken.

POSSIBLE CONCLUSION: Students should compare the accuracy of their hypothesis with the actual results. It will be interesting to see how accurate the original sample turns out.
