Learning Objective:
After observing the caterpillars, the students are expected to write down and draw their observations in their log.
List of Materials needed:
1. Butterfly cage
2. Caterpillars
3. Butterfly journal/log
Pre-Activity Preparation:
Teacher must set up the caterpillars in their cage and pass out butterfly logs to each student.
Don’t forget to feed the caterpillars and clean the cage!
Transition:
This is an individual activity where students will stay at their own desks, observe the butterflies and write/draw their observations in their log.
Procedure:
1. Explain to students that there are new class pets. Let the students take turns looking at the caterpillars. Have students make a hypothesis of what will happen to the caterpillars.
2. Pass out butterfly logs to each student.
3. Every day until the caterpillars turn into butterflies, have the students take 5 minutes to observe the insects.
4. After observing the insects, have the students write down and draw their observations in their log.
5. Wrap it up and tell the students to put their logs away and get ready for the next activity.
At the end of the lesson…
Give students a quiz or test over the stages of a butterfly and collect the logs for a quiz grade.
