Title – Oh, Now I See! – Creating a Model of the Eye

By – Janeth Eby

Primary Subject – Science

Secondary Subjects – Art, Other

Grade Level – 1 – 6

Time: 1 hour

Goals:

To teach students the anatomy of the eye, while also helping them to think critically about the key attributes of a useful anatomical model.

Objectives:

Students will create a model of the eye and use it to learn the anatomy of the eye.

Students will compare their model to the real thing, listing differences between the model and an actual eye. Students will discuss how their model could be improved and what this exercise has taught them about the anatomy of the eye and the usefulness of models in science.

Note:

This model can be made more or less complex by adding or subtracting steps. For a very basic model, students can simply color a reinforcement sticker and stick it to a partially inflated white balloon. This could illustrate the parts of the eye a child can see (sclera, iris and pupil).

Vocabulary:

  • anatomical model
  • eye socket
  • sclera
  • vitreous humor

  • pupil

  • iris

  • optic nerve

  • cornea
