Title - Hispanic Heritage

Grade Level - 2-5
Objectives: Students will:
1. be divided into groups of three.
2. examine one of five Latin American countries of choice for weather, landscape, traditions/holidays, foods, and language.
3. write about the similarities and differences between the L.A. country and the United States using complete sentences (nouns, adjectives, verbs).
4. recreate the country's map.
5. use the internet (with assistance) to research the country of choice.
Materials:
Map of Latin American country of choice
Crayons/pencils
Paper/construction paper
Activities:
Day 1
- Review the terms "Hispanic" and Latin America.
- Review the 5 Latin American countries from last week:
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (plus Mexico).
- Show children the map of Latin America on the overhead projector (using the website listed below)
- Divide children into groups and allow them to choice a Latin American country to observe.
Day 2
- During computer lab time, assist the students with finding the
information for the country they chose. They will fill in the
information about the country on a pre-prepared form.
Day 3
- Children will put listed information from form into a paragraph
using complete sentences. They will also create their version of that country’s map using construction paper, and crayons. Teacher will display a collage of all maps.
Assessment: Teacher observation of student recorded responses.
Creative Arts Integration: Students will create a replica of a Latin
American flag.
