Day 10: Green Day

Goal:

Students will culminate their activity by planting a garden and/or fixing up a community space in order to use it for physical activity.

Steps:

  1. Warm-up: Discuss how aware students feel their school is about health, diet and fitness?
  2. Tell students that they will begin to plan a way they can make their environment healthier. One way students can do that is by making their environment greener.
  3. Depending on the school environment, select an indoor or outdoor space for a community garden. Have students select what types of plants they would like to grow. Research which plants will have the best chance of survival. If students can grow fruits or vegetables, encourage them to create a card detailing the nutritional value of these foods.
  4. Other Ideas: If students cannot plant a garden, encourage them to think of other ideas to celebrate "Teens for Greens." For example:
    1. Create a green day celebration where people bring in different healthy foods to share with others.
    2. Evaluate school menus in terms of healthy eating, run a healthy snack bar.
    3. Develop a brochure for a grocery stand about the nutrients in each type of food.
    4. Organize a health information center where other students can learn about BMI and how to increase their daily activity through simple activities.
    5. Create an impromptu exercise area where students can take a few minutes after lunch to lift weight, do sit-ups, or jumping jacks.
  5. Reflect: Have student write our a few ideas they will take away with them after these ten days. What do they think they will continue to focus on? Healthy eating? Exercise? Issues of public health?
