Title - The Preposition Picture Book
By - Karen Haney
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Other: ESL Service Project
Grade Level - 8-9
Target Population: ESL Students (utilized with Spanish/English students)
General: This project is designed to acquaint/review proper preposition choices in writing for Spanish-speaking students learning English as their second language. The 9th graders chose 2 to 3 prepositions to illustrate. The pictures were placed in sheet protectors, arranged alphabetically in a notebook and presented as a gift to a class of elementary ESL students as a reference book for their class. The project was utilized as a means to keep them focused upon the very specific nature of English prepositions while having some fun and providing a community service.
Part 1: Acquaint students with the common propositions, including compound prepositions. They should define each preposition as accurately as possible. Challenge them to not use other prepositions whenever possible.
Part 2: Preposition recognition furthered by using printed articles and advertisements. Locate all prepositions and underline them.
Part 3: Each student elects 2 or 3 prepositions to illustrate. The illustration must be neat and colorful. At the bottom of the pages, the students write a simple sentence stating what the picture contains. I.E.: The squirrel is next to the tree.
Part 4: Students will draft a letter of presentation to the class chosen to receive the book, signed by all that made the book. A committee of students will assemble the book including design an attractive cover page and author page(s). If possible, a second student committee may deliver the book.
