Title - Verbs and Creative Writing

Objective: Students will use verb(s) from the read-aloud book to identify with a character.
Materials
1. Caribbean Dream by Rachel Isadora
2. pencil
3. paper
Procedure:
After reading and discussing (discuss the Caribbean, the lifestyle of the people based on the pictures, what it would be like to be a child on an island) the book Caribbean Dream, ask the students to imagine they are one of the children in the book or on the island. The pictures and words describe different activities (verbs) the children do such as swim, sing, sail, dream and run. Instruct them to write three paragraphs explaining a dream they may have as one of the children of the island. because the last page says:
Where darkness meets light,
We dream.
We dream.
To describe their dream, they must use one of the verbs in the book. Encourage them to describe the setting, the weather, the people and anything else they thought of as you were reading the book. Have them write in first person, using proper punctuation, grammar and spelling.
Evaluation: Their dream must use of the verbs from the book. It must also be written in first person and have proper spelling and grammar.
