Title – Visualizing While Listening

By – Sarah Hollenbeck

Primary Subject – Other

Grade Level – 2

Objective: The second grade students will:

  • use verbal cues to visualize a picture in their mind
  • record what they "saw" in their mind in their Writer’s Notebooks

Materials: Writer’s Notebooks, colored pencils and/or crayons

Initiation: Have students think about and share a favorite vacation spot. Where were they? What made it so special? Have them close their eyes and envision their vacation spot.

Procedure:

For this lesson, the teacher will:

  1. Ask students to take out their Writer’s Notebooks and colored pencils/crayons
  2. Ask students to get comfortable in desk and close eyes. Teacher will describe a place (his/her choice, can be real or imaginary such as a place from a book, place that the class is study, a field trip location, place in town, etc.).
  3. Ask students to listen to teacher’s description
  4. Once teacher is finished describing his/her place, students will draw what they have seen in their "mind’s eye."

Closure: Students can share their pictures and where they think the teacher was describing was located (could be a place from a book, place that the class is study, a field trip location, place in town, etc.).

Assessment: Students will be recording what they heard and "saw" in their mind in their Writer’s Notebooks. Each student will have a chance to share in either the whole class setting or with a partner.
