Subject – Other, Social Studies
Grade Level – 2-3
Lesson Title: Know the Phone
Grade Level: Third grade
Teacher’s Name: Damien Drago
RATIONALE
The purpose of this lesson is to educate our children to stay calm in emergencies and to be prepared to
take action using the phone. It can be so easy to panic in emergency situations. This is why it is
important that children know necessary information and necessary phone numbers to use. A great way to
have a poster with all necessary phone numbers on it. By doing this children will be educated safety and
they will be prepared in an emergency
BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES:
Cognitive Objective(s): Given a construction paper and markers, the student will correctly write and label
five emergency phone numbers.
Affective Objective(s): Given information on who to call in an emergency, the student will carefully
choose two family friends to add to the list of “Who to call in an emergency.”
Psychomotor Objective(s): Given an emergency scenario, the students will correctly dial 911 and give
the mock operator appropriate information.
MATERIALS NEEDED: Construction Paper
Markers
Telephone Book
Toy Phone
PROCEDURES:
CONTENT
I will discuss the importance of the phone in an emergency. Police Department, Fire Department, 911,
and trustworthy family friends are all important numbers to have written down somewhere. When talking
on the phone in an emergency situation, being specific is important. You must know your address or
location, be able to describe what happened, and if there is a victim, their condition, and what if anything
has been done to help the situation.
ACTIVITY
The activity will combine safety and art. I will give each student markers and a piece of construction
paper. I will then show the children where to find the numbers in a phone book. I will then give the
children the appropriate numbers. I will also ask the children to choose two phone numbers of Family or
friends they can call during an emergency. They will write these numbers and decorate the construction
paper. I will then stress that it is important to hang these up at home so everyone knows who to call in an
emergency.
EVAULATION:
Objective 1: The students demonstrate a clear understanding of why emergency numbers are important
to display at home.
Objective 2: The student carefully chooses two family or friends to contact in an emergency and
understands why they chose them.
Objective 3: The student shows an understanding of how to talk on the phone in an emergency.
