Title – Teacher May I?

By – Katie Bleaken

Primary Subject – Music

Grade Level – 1-5

This lesson can be used to review anything you want really. I use it to review different note values, or different instruments, and the kids love it.

Materials: just enough room to dance, or form a long line.

Review the different instruments or note values with students. Discuss which instruments are bigger than others, and how they are played (have students make motions like playing), then discuss which notes are longer than others, and how many beats each note gets.

Play “Teacher may I?” and tell each student that they can take (insert number) __________ steps (insert different instruments, or note values). Each thing discussed dictates a different kind of step… big, small… etc.

For the older kids, I like to have them walk different rhythms… like for “ta ta ti-ti ta” they would take two medium steps, 2 small steps, and one medium step.
