This is a fun activity to help introduce students to composers.

You will need to have a set of composer portraits displayed in your classroom, or you could use the flash card size, and just get closer to the students. I have the portraits up in chronological order with the names of the composers in 1 inch high letters easy enough for all to see. First I point to each poster and say the name of the composer, then have the students repeat. We name all the composers and then sing “Willoby Walloby Woo” using the composers’ names instead of the students’ names. The kids get a kick out of singing “Willoby Walloby Waytoven, an elephant sat on Beethoven”. It gets pretty tricky with Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, but that just adds to the fun! They become familiar with the composers and learn to pronounce their names. I have also used the posters to help point out to students how fashions and hair have changed through the centuries. Any use of the posters seems to make the students more interested in hearing the music.
