Supplies and Materials:

1 student's bag lunch per group
1 calculator per group
3 clean trash items from each student (not food wastes)
5 trash bags
large plastic soda bottle with top portion removed or small aquarium
plastic to serve as a liner
soil (NOT POTTING SOIL-- it doesn't have the necessary microorganisms)
sand or gravel(to absorb moisture)
charcoal (to prevent odors)
toothpicks
spoons or scoops for pouring
water
a magnifying glass or microscope and slides
cardboard
orange peel
apple core
newspaper
glossy magazine paper
cardboard
cotton cloth
aluminum foil

large cardboard box
bathroom scale

Technology:

Microsoft Word or ClarisWorks
Shockwave for "Cool Links" - "Roscoe's Room" and "Lorax"
Printer
Excel or another graphing program
Cassette recorder
PowerPoint
