Butterfly Unit Contents:

Note from LessonPlansPage.com: This Butterfly Unit uses some materials (books, life cycle cards, worksheets, butterfly shape cutouts, etc.) that are not included. You may be able to create your own version of the materials, purchase the materials, do without the materials, or contact the author at the email address at the bottom of this lesson plan to request more information on the materials.

Standards Met: (Language Arts): 1.1.1 Listens according to criteria, 1.1.2 Listens for details, 1.2.2 Contributes orally within groups, 5.2.1 Creates written draft, 5.4.4 Sequences words in sentences.

Objectives: To help the children with reading and rhyming skills, and to make them more familiar with poetry.

Introduction: I will read the children the poem, Butterfly Wings, which will be on the overhead projector. We will talk about what poetry is and how some poetry rhymes and some does not.

Lesson: I will ask the children to write down some of the words they remember about caterpillars and butterflies from our lessons and activities. I will ask them to write a short poem about their favorite things about caterpillars or butterflies, along with some drawings. I will walk around the room and help the children as they create their poems. When they are done, I will ask them to draw a picture to go with their poem.

We will share the poems with the whole class, and then hang them up in our butterfly area.

Materials: Butterfly Wings poem, transparency, overhead projector, paper, pencils, and markers.

Self-Evaluation: I would evaluate this lesson by reading the children's poems to see what they have learned from our lessons.

ESOL accommodations: This is a good activity for ESOL children because they will work together at their seats to think of ideas for their poems. They can also look at the overhead projector for extra help.
