Note from LessonPlansPage.com: This Butterfly Unit uses some materials (books, life cycle cards, worksheets, butterfly shape cutouts, etc.) that are not included. You may be able to create your own version of the materials, purchase the materials, do without the materials, or contact the author at the email address at the bottom of this lesson plan to request more information on the materials.

Standards Met (Science): 1.1 Recognizes diversity of living things, 1.1.1 Identifies diversity of living things, 1.3 Recognizes parts of living things, 1.3.1 Identifies parts of living things, 1.8.1 Identifies animals in environment, 1.8.2 Identifies animals by movement, 6.2.2 Treats living things with respect/responsibility

Objectives: The objectives are for the children to observe butterflies up close in order to learn more about them, and to foster an appreciation and curiosity about them

Introduction: We will talk about what fruits butterflies are attracted to, such as bananas, strawberries, watermelon, and apples.

Lesson: In class we will cut up some of these fruits and make our own butterfly delight. We will place the cut up fruit in a plastic container, and mix in sugar water. We will hang it outside our classroom and observe it a couple of times a day to see if we have any visitors.

We will make a class graph to note what butterflies and other insects come to our feeder. The children can continue to do this even after the mini-unit is over.

Materials: bananas, strawberries, apples, sugar water, plastic container, paper and pens for graph.

Self-Evaluation: I will evaluate this lesson purely on the joy and excitement the children display getting to see butterflies and other insects up close at our feeder.

ESOL accommodations: There are a lot of visual, hands-on components in this lesson that are helpful to ESOL children.
