Standards Met (Science): 1.3.1 Identifies parts of living things, 6.1.2 Seeks answers, 6.1.3 Collects and organizes information, 6.3.1 Participates in cooperative activities/tasks.

Objectives: To help the children understand the concept of sequencing; that certain things in nature must happen in the correct order.

Introduction: I will introduce this lesson by reading and discussing with the children the book, From Caterpillar to Butterfly, and showing them the life cycle cards again.

Lesson: After reading the story and looking at the cards, I will work with small groups of children to see if they can correctly sequence the life cycle of the Monarch caterpillar to the butterfly. They can do this by putting the cards in order, drawing sequential pictures, or telling me the steps orally. When we are done, we will get back together as a class, and check ourselves by looking at the book or the life cycle cards. We will also check the book to see if all types of caterpillars go through the same stages as the Monarch.

Self-Evaluation: I will evaluate this lesson based on if the children can correctly sequence the life cycle in some way, either on paper, with the cards, or by telling me the steps.

ESOL accommodations: The cards have both a visual image and words that I can read, which is helpful for ESOL children. They also get to handle the cards and put them in the correct order.
