Title – Place Value the “Dice” Way This is a fun way to get kids to use place value correctly in both the written and standard form. I break my kids into groups and give them a baggie containing six dice. They roll the die and arrange the numbers to make a 6-digit number. They must write that number on their paper and then also write it in words. Then, they take away a die and roll again to make a 5-digit number. The process continues until they just write a one-digit number. For example, if they rolled 4 dice and got the numbers 498 and 7, then they could write the number 4,987 and then write it in word form: four thousand nine hundred eighty seven. It is a fun way for them to practice those place value skills as well as reading and writing numbers.
