Title – Word Funeral

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 6-8

Getting Ready:

  • Have a list of commonly used words. Such as like, cool, bad, sad, etc.
  • Tombstone cutouts
  • Candles (Get administration approval prior)
  • Have each word’s eulogy or obituary written. (The cheesier the better)

Process:

  • Have candles lit and lights out
  • Have tombstones ready with the dead words written on them.
  • Have an elaborate story of how you are a killer, a killer of the English language.
  • Introduce each word and display it on the wall.
  • Let students know these words are dead and cannot be used again in the classroom.
  • Turn the lights back on and blow out all the candles. Explain that just like all deaths life goes on and so must our use of the English language.
