Description: This is a lesson that promotes vocabulary building usage, critical thinking, predicting consequences, and drawing conclusions, with a focus on writing.

Goals: By the time this lesson is completed, students will be able to 1) identify the main ideas, increase their critical thinking of various situations, be able to distinguish fact from opinion, identify different consequences to various situations, draw conclusions, distinguish false from accurate images, and develop their vocabulary.

Objectives: The objective is to get students to think about the choices that they make for their lives, for each choice will have a consequence, either positive or negative. The objective is also for students to identify problems and to be able to resolve them in a rational and mature manner.

Procedure: After reading the book Awakenings, the teacher uses the workbook as a tool.

Example Questions:

Main Idea: What shaped Betty’s mom attitude toward education? Why was she determined to show Betty that an education was important?

Critical Thinking: “She knew that forcing Betty to attend school would defeat the purpose of teaching her that the easier way out was not necessarily the best way. “Can you think of things that seem easily obtainable but are not?

Distinguishing Fact From Opinion: Your past failures don’t matter, for you are still capable of succeeding. Is this fact ( a statement that can be proven true ) or an opinion ( a statement that represents a personal feeling or subjective judgment)? Explain.
