Objective:

  1. Students will be able to read the beginning chapters of

    The Outsiders

    ,
  2. summarize the basic elements of these chapters (character, plot, setting, etc.),
  3. define different character traits,
  4. identify and explain the main characters’ different character traits, and
  5. create a collage from different images which display and define a particular character trait (students opinion).

Materials:

  1. Copy of

    The Outsiders

    for each student
  2. Magazines
  3. Construction paper
  4. Markers
  5. Scissors
  6. Glue

Procedure:

  1. Review the historical period in which

    The Outsiders

    takes place. Include major events, trends, and history.

  2. Review major character traits

  3. Read/review the beginning chapters of

    The Outsiders

    .

  4. Discuss the major character traits exhibited by each character in the novel

  5. Either have the student pick out a character trait that was discussed along with its corresponding character or assign each student a character trait.

  6. Discuss with students the importance of these character traits both in life and in the novel. Relate these traits to the evolution of the character and the plot of the novel.

  7. Have the students discuss what these different traits mean to them and how one person’s view may be different from another.

  8. Last, have the students create a collage using images from old magazine that represent/displays their assigned character trait. Also, have them write down how these images represent the trait and how it relates to

    The Outsiders

    . Have several students present.

Assessment:

    Use the collage and presentation as an assessment tool for each student’s understanding of the character traits or a quiz may be given.
