Title – Synonym Flyswatter Game

Grade Level – 3-4

Objectives

Students will:

1. Follow directions

2. Reinforce awareness and knowledge of synonyms

3. Build vocabulary skills

Materials needed:

1. List of 15 words and their synonyms

2. 15 pieces of paper with the synonyms on them

3. Markers

4. 2 flyswatters

5. Tape

Before the lesson:

Put the 15 synonyms on the board with the tape

Intro to lesson:

1. Ask the children if they know what synonyms are

2. Tell them if they do not know

3. Give examples such as: hear/listen, damp/wet, etc

4. Explain the game

The lesson:

Put the children into two groups. Let one child from each group come up and grab a flyswatter. Say a word from your list and tell them to find the word on the board that means the same thing. The child who swats the right word scores a point for their team. The group with the most points wins.
