Title – Step-Up-To-Writing Objective: Materials: Lesson:
2. Reason 1 3. Reason 2 4. Reason 3 5. Conclusion/Ending Sentence When done with the review, get the children in groups of 4-5. Tell the children that in their groups, they will be writing a step by step instructional paragraph about how to make a simple peanut butter sandwich (in the form of step-up-to-writing). Let them write for about 5 minutes – it shouldn’t take too long. Then collect all the groups’ papers. Read one of the recipes step by step and do EXACTLY what it says. (For example, if it says something like “Making a peanut butter is sandwich is fun and easy! First, get two slices of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a knife. Second, spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread,” you should stick a finger in the peanut butter and then using your finger, put it all over one slice of bread – even the crust and both sides, etc.) The kids will love how funny it is! Then when you’ve acted out all of the paragraphs, tell them to rewrite their paragraphs in groups, but being VERY descriptive and specific. Collect their papers again and act them out once more. The paragraphs should be descriptive and easy to follow. When done, cut sandwiches in quarters and hand them out to the kids to eat.
