Indian Removal or any other historical event

Students sit in a circle.

I model speed reading for them, by only reading key words in a paragraph. Then I give a summary of what I just read.

I have students write down the key fact incorporating note taking strategies.

After helping them with 2-3 paragraphs of speed reading they seem to catch on and I go around the circle having each student speed read one, two or more sentences; the reader or another student can help with determining the main idea or point of the paragraph.

Students like taking turns practicing speed reading.

Some enjoy determining the facts to write down.

It includes all levels of reading and comprehension ability and lets them work individually or as a group.
