Title – Spelling Antonyms

By – Clairemarie LoCicero

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 3rd

Objective: To enhance the students understanding of spelling words and to show the relationship between spelling and reading.

Materials: Easel paper, markers or crayons and spelling words.

Procedure:

    1. Review with the students what an antonym is and compare it to a synonym.

    2. Come up with an example word and give an antonym and synonym for the word.

    3. Write a spelling word on the easel and ask the students to give a brief definition of the word. Then list an antonym and synonym of the word.

    4. Point out the differences. Do this for all spelling words.

    5. When all the words have been gone through, put the paper on the wall and have the students do 5 words on their own. They should give an antonym and a synonym for each word. This can be done as an in class activity or as a homework assignment.
