Introduction:

    In this lesson, students will write about a special memento using “Self to Text” writing.

Objective:

    Students will be able to identify with a text and compose a writing piece that expresses the “Self to Text” concept with 100 % accuracy.

New York City Standards:

    E2b Produce a response to literature

    E3b Participate in group meeting

Aim:

    “Self to Text” Writing

Motivation:

    Simply use this time to introduce students to the concept of “Self to Text.” If children are already familiar with “Self to Text,” then have students tell the class what “Self to Text” is using examples.

  • Mentor text (teacher’s “Self to Text” writing)

  • My Best Sweet Potato

    by Rainy Dohaney (or you may use

    Knuffel Bunny

    by Mo Willems)
  • Crayons/Markers
  • Woolyman writing sheet
  • Picture or actual memento
  • Classical music CD

Engagement Activity:

    During the motivation, students will “Turn and Talk” and discuss the concept of “Self to Text” and share some experiences of “Self to Text” with his/her “Turn and Talk” partners.

Development:

  1. Begin with the motivation (above).
  2. Conduct engagement activity (above). Give students approximately five minutes to complete the engagement activity.

  3. Read to the children

    My Best Sweet Potato

    by Rainy Dohaney. Conduct a small picture walk.
  4. Read the teacher’s (your) “Self to Text” writing to model to students the writing they will do themselves with his/her special memento. Also show or display your special memento to the class.
  5. Children will then go back to his/her seat and write a few sentences about his/her special memento on the Woolyman writing sheet. Students may lightly color in his/her Woolyman. During the Writer’s Workshop, play classical music.
