Title – Editing Lesson Plan

By – Sharon Allwood

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 2-5

Aim:

    Learning to self-edit

Materials:

My Tooth Is About To Fall Out

by Grace Maccarone, markers, rubrics chart, chart paper and pencils

Motivation:

Students will help the teacher to correct sentences and words that do not make sense.

Procedure:

Students will be instructed to the rug for Writing Workshop. I will read a passage from the story with many spelling and grammatical mistakes. This will be written on chart paper. The class and I will review the rubrics chart and assign a grade to the sample. The students will explain why they assigned the grade. Students will be selected to identify the mistakes and help me to correct them. After this is completed I will tell the students that what we have just done is called editing. Then the story

My Tooth Is About To Fall Out

will be introduced and read. After the story, the corrected paragraph will be re-read and students will be asked to explain why the passage is better.

Guided Practice:

Students will help the teacher correct a flawed paragraph on chart paper.

Independent Practice:

Students will return to their seats where they will edit a paragraph about fishing on a worksheet. They will be required to rewrite the paragraph correctly. I will circulate to help students.

Evaluation:

Students will be selected to come up and correct sentences from the paragraph that they have written. They will explain why they made the corrections.

Follow Up:

Students will edit their current writing assignment from their folders to improve clarity.

Standards:

#1 Read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

#3 Read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

#4 Read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction.
