Title – Scrabble By – Doug Henderson Primary Subject – Language Arts Secondary Subjects - Grade Level – 4-6 Title: Scrabble Objective: 4-6 graders will demonstrate teamwork and word skills to form words and earn points. Benefits: Good “Proficiency test” reinforcing game, stressing teamwork and quick moves. It may not seem like it, but kids get a great workout from this game! Equipment: Index cards with letters and point values such as in the board game “Scrabble”. Game: Give each student a letter from the card deck (making sure that enough vowels and consonants are given). Each card has a point value, written on the bottom of the card. Explain to students that some letters may be more difficult to use in words, but those letters are worth more points. On command, students work together to form words in a given time (2-3 minutes). At the time limit, students add up the points they have for their word; each student in that word takes that many points with them in the next round. Teacher decides if the word is spelled properly, and encourages (and helps) students form challenging words. After two or three rounds, allow students to exchange letters and try again. Wrap up: How did it feel to have a letter that was difficult to use? How did it feel to have other people want you in their word? Did you want a letter that was easy or harder to use?
