Objective:

    To help students become more aware of the animals they can find in the various biomes of the world, specifically in the arctic tundras and deserts.

Materials:

    ·

    Mama, Do You Love Me?

    · Pencil and paper

    · Resources to look up Desert animals

    · Definitions of new vocabulary from story

Anticipatory Set:

    Ask the students various questions to show what they have learned about the arctic tundra. The teacher will show the students the book

    Mama, Do You Love Me?

    and then ask the students to predict what the story will be about, where it takes place, etc.

Lesson Objective:

    To make students more aware of the animals they can find in the various biomes of the world, specifically in the arctic tundra and desert.

Teacher Input:

    The teacher will begin reading the book

    Mama, Do You Love Me?

    to the students. Throughout the story, the teacher will ask various questions to check for understanding of the story. The teacher will also make sure students are taking notice of the various animals that are being mentioned.

Modeling:

    After reading the story to the students, the teacher will explain they will be writing their own story, similar in style to

    Mama, Do You Love Me?

    . However, instead of incorporating animals from the tundra into their stories, the students will use what they know about deserts to create a short fictional story. The teacher will read a few sample sentences to the students using well-known animals that live in the desert.

Guided Practice / Check for Understanding:

    The students will recall what animals were represented in the story. The students will make a list of animals that they know live in the desert without looking at other resources.

Independent Group Work:

    The students will write and illustrate a short story, similar in style to

    Mama, Do You Love Me?

    . They will include animals that live in the desert in their stories. The students will be allowed to view additional resources that show various animals that inhabit the deserts for help in writing their stories.

Closure:

    Students will read their stories to the class. The teacher will make a list on the board of the various animals students mention in their stories. Students will be asked if they can think of any other animals that live in the desert that they didn’t mention in their stories.
