I tell the students we are at the scene of a fire. I give them the names of three people at the fire they will interview: the fire chief, a fire victim and an eyewitness.

My students interview me as the three people on the scene. They are encouraged to take notes about everything that is asked. The goal is for them to find out as much information as they can about what happened.

Students are then given a few days to go home and put together a news story using the information they have gathered in class. I give them a model of a news story about a fire to use as a reference.
