Title – Shared Readings of Tall Tales

By – Debbie Haren

Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 2-4

Materials:

A copy of Walt Disney’s Melody Times vcr tape, vcr and a t.v.

Anticipatory:

You might think that Tall Tales are old and nobody pays much attention to them anymore but Walt Disney came out with a tape a few years ago with some favorite tall tales on them and it was a best seller. When I was a child these stories were on a record and a story book came with it. I used to listen to these records over and over again. My favorite was Pecos Bill. Would you like to see the tape from Disney?

Discussion:

After watching the tape discuss the children’s favorite ports. Ask the kids which was their favorite Pecos Bill or Johnny Appleseed. Were there differences between the stories that we read by Steven Kellog and the movies by Disney? Why do you think that is? When a story is passed down from one person to another is it always told the exact same way?

Writing:

Write down your favorite part of the vcr tape and draw a picture to illustrate it.
