ANTICIPATORY SET:

Have children look at the illustrations on the cover of the book. What do you see on the illustration? What is a hammock? What expression is on the face of Johnny? Ask the students if anyone has seen Melody Time by Disney? If so ask how this look different from that Johnny Appleseed. Read the story of Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg.

Discussion

Where was his father? What happened to his mom and brother? How old was Johnny when this happened? What kind of things can you make with apples? How many children were in Johnny’s family? How did Johnny trick the men into clearing his land?

Vocabulary

What is a cellar? What did they used to be used for? What does boisterous mean?

Geography

Name two states where Johnny planted seeds. Show me on a United States map where these states are. If you live in the United States what are you clled? Are you called a U.S. person?What is a citizen and what does that mean to be a citizen of the United States? Is that a priveledge? Does everyone have the same freedom we do?

Writing

Do you believe in ghosts? How do feel about people saying they have seen the ghost of johnny appleseed? Do you think it is possible? Write in your journal about this and what was your favorite part of the book.
