Title – Reading Homework

By – Keith A. Barker

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – any grade

This is a reading assignment that may be used across subject areas.

Explain to the class that this is a daily homework assignment. They must read 30 minutes every day.

Give each student a bookmark with the days of the week on it and two blank lines beside the day. One blank is for the number of minutes The other is for the initials of a parent. Finally, have a box to check if the student read to a child less than 6 or a non-reader like an English-as-a-second-language student. They must read 2 1/2 hours each week. Have extra bookmarks available, in case they get lost.

If the non-reader box is checked the points are doubled.

On Fridays, they turn them in the bookmarks. If they forget, they may turn them in late with no penalties on Monday or Tuesday, but not after that. If they still forget, tell them to read to a non-reader to get extra points. At the beginning of the year, during Parents’ Day and Parent Conferences, explain the daily assignment. It can also be used as an across subject activity. The student may read their textbook, or anything their parents approve of. Having parental approval is an important part of this work. It also gets the parents involved with the students’ work. It can be used as part of a school improvement plan because it can be measured.
