Title – Preposition Treasure Map

By – Patricia Mueller

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 6-8

Objectives:

The students will use prepositions in writing.

The students will create a treasure map with directions.

Materials

    Computer Paper or Construction Paper

    Colored Pencils

In order to teach prepositions, I like to give students projects that might be in real life. Before I give them the project, I give notes on prepositions and a chart with all the possible prepositions. I make sure the students understand the function of the word.

I tell the students prepositions are found in directions. Therefore, I ask them to create a treasure map (make sure it looks old!). On the back of the map, they must write directions on how to get to the treasure.

Ex: Start next to the old oak tree. or Walk over the stone bridge.

The student must have at least five steps (or directions) using five different prepositions.

Grading:

3pts for each preposition (must be in a complete sentence)

    5pts for the map

    TOTAL: 20pts

The students really get into it! Plus they used the prepositions perfectly!
