Title – POD poem First put your students into groups of four (or in PODs). Give each student a strip of paper (or have one in each group tear a regular sheet into fours). Assign each group a different rhyming word (“at”, “en”, etc..) Have each student in the group write one line. The last word in the sentence must rhyme with the base word. When all students have written their sentence, have the groups arrange what order the sentences should be. Remind your students that the poem may not necessarily make sense. When they decide the order, have them tape or glue their poem an a regular sheet of paper. If you wish, have each group read their poem. Viola’, they’ve written their first poem! At this point, you can take your lesson into any direction you need to take your poetry unit into. Very simple, indeed!
