Title – Object and Word Match

Grade Level – Grades K-1
Materials needed: (1) Medium size flat box with low sides,
Five (5) small objects that represent three or four letter words, (i.e. ball, top, cat, car, box, cup),
Small sheets of white paper for teacher to write on, thin-medium black felt tip marker.
Number of players: 1-5, (It works best one-on-one or in small groups)
Purpose: To identify objects and match them with their name. Helps with reading skills, and comprehension.
What to do: Teacher places the objects in the box in a way that they all can be seen. Preferably 1- 2 inches apart.
Teacher then takes a small piece of paper and decides in her mind (without telling student) which object she will spell on the paper. (i.e., she sees the car, and then writes the “car” on the paper.
Teacher asks the students, “What object am I writing?”
Student looks at the written word, and the objects in the box, and tries to find the object by matching it with the word. Whoever has the answer raises their hand and says, “I know!” And the student takes the object out of the box and places it alongside it’s name.
This is a “Montessori” activity, so I can’t take credit for this idea.
I used it to teach two of our children how to read.
It’s a lot of fun!
