Title – The Giving Tree

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Secondary Subjects – Other

Grade Level – 1-5

Procedure:

On the first day of school, I read

    The Giving Tree

by Shel Silverstein to my first graders. After reading the story, I begin asking comprehension questions about the story and the special gifts that the tree shared with the boy. We then discuss what gifts we have to offer one another. After the discussion, I then have the students draw a picture of their special gift and write a simple sentence about their gift. We then share these pictures in small group and I display them in my room under OUR SPECIAL GIFTS. I also save these writing to keep in their portfolio.
